ASIAN GEOS COMPLETED GEOTECHNICAL AND SURVEY WORKS IN the caspian sea [02-06-2010]
Asian Geos (“AG”) has recently successfully completed a challenging geotechnical and analogue survey project in the Caspian Sea. The AG-25 motion-compensated Marine Drill Rig complete with downhole CPT system and a set of mooring system were mobilized via sea freight from Singapore to Dubai and later by land transport in 10 lorry trailers though Iran. The analogue survey equipment were sent direct by air to Baku, Aizerbaijan.
All equipment including the stern mooring system were installed onto a local vessel MV Neftegas 58 and subsequently mobilized to the project location which is located in Block 1 off Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan with average water depth of 70 meters.
The scope for the geotechnical survey involved soil boring, sampling and downhole CPT to 100 meters below seabed. Pilot holes were also sunk to confirm the absence of shallow gas. The scope for survey included 200 km run of pipeline route and platform site survey involving the use of multibeam echosounder, single beam echosounder, sparker boomer and side scan sonar.
Helmi Zulkawi, Asian Geos Managing Director comments:
"This is AG’s second project in the Caspian Sea, the first being the one carried out in 2005. The major logistical difficulties faced by our team during the mobilization were in finding the suitable and available vessel, ground local supports and customs and immigration issues. During the course of the fieldwork, we were facing problems with the highly unpredictable and unfavorable weather conditions of the Caspian Sea (with wind gusting over 50 knots at times), lack of satellite communications and physical obstructions by the other client activities at site. Despite all that our team managed to complete the work with minimal equipment and vessel downtime and most importantly to the satisfaction of the client. This project provides us with the morale booster and proves that AG is capable to undertake more and more challenging projects away from its home base in Kuala Lumpur. I wish to congratulate everyone in AG including personnel from our sister company Orogenic Geoexpro for the job well done.”
